How to repair minor cracks in plaster
- Minor cracks in plaster are very common as modern plaster is much harder than traditional plasters and less accommodating of any movement. They can be caused by settlement, paster shrinkage, changes to the house structure or damage. I often see hairline cracks in ceilings in rooms below where perhaps extra weight has been added to the room above or the house has been altered in some way such as a loft extension. They can appear in houses where seasonal movement might be common or in areas with clay soils which can shrink & expand through the seasons. They often appear in the ceiling below some unconverted lofts which may not have timbers strong enough to support the weight of people walking around without the ceiling joists flexing.
